The big picture (read this first)
The daf opens still inside a baraita begun on 132b — the list of Temple rites reserved to
the sons of Aaron (receiving and sprinkling the blood, the sota water, breaking the
heifer’s neck, purifying a leper, lifting the hands for the priestly blessing). Its closing
line is what carries into today: a priest who does not believe in these rites has no
share in the gifts. Read the reason back the other way and you get the challenge to Rav
Ḥisda — believing is the test, not expertise — and the whole thread of yesterday snaps
into focus.
But the heart of 133a is not halakha at all. It is one of the great ethical passages of Shas
on a deceptively small question — how should a priest take what is his? Snatch the gift
from a child’s hands out of love for the mitzva, or is snatching contempt? From the single
word “and he shall give” the Gemara rules it is contempt: the owner gives; the priest
does not grab. Then Abaye tells his own story — a staged retreat from seizing the
gifts, to merely asking for them, to waiting silently, to withdrawing his hand
altogether — each step triggered by a line he overheard.
The modest withdraw their hands; the greedy divide. Abaye keeps taking one day a year —
Erev Yom Kippur — only so his fellow priests will not forget that he is a priest at all.
Woven into this is the sharp warning about teaching an unworthy student — dramatized in
the dream that rebukes Rava for eating a gift he could have done without. Only then does the
daf turn technical: when a partnership with a priest or gentile must be marked, the
famous baraita of the twenty-four priestly gifts, and the principle that closes the page
— we follow the obligation, so a gift clings to the limb that bears it, not to whoever
owns the bulk of the animal.
Key concepts & terms

- Rabbi Zeira — third-generation Amora, Babylon-born, later of Eretz Yisrael; likens teaching an unworthy student to idolatry.
- Ḥiyya bar Rav — early Amora, son of Rav; holds that a partner in one limb is exempt from all the gifts — the view the Gemara conclusively refutes. (Ḥiyya bar Rav, not the Tanna Rabbi Ḥiyya.)
- Rav Adda bar Ahava — here the later one, a contemporary of Rava and Rav Pappa; interprets the disqualified-consecrated baraita before Rav Pappa. (Not the earlier Rav Adda bar Ahava, disciple of Rav.)
- Rav Pappa — fifth-generation Amora, head of the academy at Naresh; disciple of Rava and Abaye.
- Rav Ḥisda — third-generation Amora of Sura; explains what misled Ḥiyya bar Rav and cites the baraita of the twenty-four gifts.
Minor figures
- Mar Yoḥana, son of Rav Ḥana bar Adda (or bar Bizna) — the host in the story; the tradition is unsure of his father’s name, and little else is known of him.

Walking through the sugya, step by step
133a — believing, seizing, and withdrawing
The rites of Aaron’s sons. The baraita finishes its list — receiving and sprinkling the
blood, the sota water, breaking the heifer’s neck, purifying a leper, the priestly blessing
whether inside or outside the Temple — all derived from “among the sons of Aaron”: any
rite stated to the sons of Aaron. Its coda: a priest who does not believe in these has
no portion in the priesthood. The inference. The reason is that he does not believe — so
one who does believe, even if not expert, keeps his share. That contradicts Rav Ḥisda
(132b), who withheld the gift from a priest not expert in all twenty-four.
The veins of the jaw. Rabbi Abba said Rav Huna said Rav: the veins in the jaw are
forbidden because of their blood, and the jaw-gift is not given to a priest who does not
know how to remove them — lest he eat the blood. But that is not so: any preparation
removes the blood — roasting drains it, and cooking after cutting and salting drains
it too. The concern dissolves.
Love or contempt? Rava reports that Rav Yosef examined his students: a priest who
seizes the gifts — is he showing love for the mitzva or contempt for it? Rava
resolved it from “and he shall give” (Deut. 18:3) — the owner gives, the priest does
not take on his own. Seizing is contempt.
Abaye’s four postures. Abaye tells it as his own history:
- At first he seized the gifts, thinking he showed love for the mitzva.
- Once he heard “and he shall give,” he stopped seizing but would say, “Give me.”
- Once he heard the baraita on Samuel’s sons — “they turned aside after profit” (I Sam.
8:3), which R’ Meir reads as sinning merely by asking for their Levite portion aloud
— he stopped asking too, but would take if offered.
- Once he heard that “the modest withdraw their hands and the gluttons divide,” he
stopped taking even when offered — except on Erev Yom Kippur, when he took, to affirm
himself among the priests (so his priesthood would not be forgotten).
Why not just bless? Let him spread his hands for the priestly blessing all year, and
his priesthood is known! — His schedule constrained him (ansei lei idnei): teaching his
students kept him from the synagogue at the hour the blessing was said.
Assigning gifts to a poor scholar. Rav Yosef: a priest with a hard-pressed Torah
scholar in his neighborhood may assign his gifts to him — even before they reach his
own hand — provided he is one of the acquaintances of priesthood and Levites, with a
standing arrangement that makes the gifts as good as his.
The calf, the tongue, and the dream. Rava and Rav Safra visited Mar Yoḥana son of
Rav Ḥana bar Adda (some say bar Bizna), who served a prime calf. Rava told the host’s
priest-attendant: assign us the gifts, for I wish to eat tongue with mustard. He assigned
them; Rava ate, Rav Safra did not. In a dream they read to Rav Safra: “As one who removes
a garment on a cold day, as vinegar on natron, so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart”
(Prov. 25:20). Rav Safra feared he had transgressed Rav Yosef’s ruling by declining. Rav
Yosef reassured him: my leniency was for a priest who assigns to another of his own choice,
not an attendant who assigns under his host’s pressure — and it was for one who cannot
afford the meat otherwise, whereas Rava could. Then why the dream? It was aimed at
Rava. Then read it to Rava! — Rava was under reproach (nazuf) and received no
heavenly message, so it came to Rav Safra instead.
And the plain meaning? Abaye asked Rav Dimi what the verse means simply. About one who
teaches an unworthy student. So too Rav Yehuda said Rav: one who teaches an unworthy
student falls into Gehenna (from Job 20:26, where sarid means a Torah scholar); and
Rabbi Zeira said Rav: it is like throwing a stone at Markulis — an act of worship for
that idol (Prov. 26:8).
Into the mishna — marking a partnership. The mishna required one who partners with a priest
or gentile to mark the animal. Even with a gentile? A baraita seems to disagree:
partnership with a priest must be marked, but with a gentile, and disqualified consecrated
animals, need not — so how can our mishna demand marking with a gentile?
133b — the money-box, the twenty-four gifts, and the obligation
Where does he sit? The resolution turns on visibility. The baraita (no mark needed) speaks
of a gentile sitting at the butcher’s block — plainly a partner. But a priest sitting
there is no proof; onlookers say “he is buying meat.” Then say the same of the gentile!
— Rather, the gentile sits at the money-box (kasfeta). But a priest at the box is
no proof; “the butcher trusts him” to guard it. Say the same of the gentile! — There is
no such trust in a gentile. Or: an ordinary gentile shouts at the seller over prices, so
his partnership is obvious; a priest, being modest, defers — so his must be marked.
Why is a redeemed offering obvious? The baraita said disqualified consecrated animals need
no mark — apparently their status is evident. But a mishna (Bekhorot 31a) has them sold,
slaughtered, and weighed in the market like ordinary meat! Rav Adda bar Ahava explained
before Rav Pappa: the baraita means those sold at home — a firstborn and a tithe,
whose redemption value has no sanctity, and which the Sages therefore barred from the market;
selling them at home is itself the visible sign.
Partner in one limb. Rav Huna: a partner in the head is exempt only from the
jaw; in the leg, only from the foreleg; in the innards, only from the maw —
obligated in the rest. Ḥiyya bar Rav: a partner in even one of them is exempt from all
three. A baraita (“the head is mine and the rest yours — even a hundredth of the head, he is
exempt”) is pressed against Ḥiyya bar Rav, and a second, explicit baraita — exempt from the
jaw but obligated in all the rest — settles it: the refutation of Ḥiyya bar Rav is
conclusive (teyuvta).
What misled him. Rav Ḥisda: Ḥiyya bar Rav was misled by the baraita of the twenty-four
priestly gifts — all given to Aaron and his sons by a generalization and a detail and a
covenant of salt, so that fulfilling or violating one is as if for all. Its list:
- Ten in the Temple — a sin offering; a bird sin offering; a definite guilt offering; a
provisional guilt offering; communal peace offerings; the leper’s log of oil; the two loaves;
the shewbread; the leftovers of meal offerings; and the omer offering.
- Four in Jerusalem — the firstborn; the first fruits; the portions raised from the thanks
offering and the nazirite’s ram; and the hides of offerings.
- Ten in the boundaries — teruma; teruma of the tithe; ḥalla; the first shearing; the
gifts (foreleg, jaw, maw); redemption of the firstborn son; redemption of a firstborn donkey;
an ancestral field; a dedicated field; and the robbery of a convert.
Ḥiyya bar Rav thought that because the tanna counts foreleg, jaw, and maw as one, they are
one indivisible gift. Not so: the tanna also counts the thanks-offering portions and the
nazirite’s ram as one — not because they are one, but because they are similar. So too the
three gifts are grouped for similarity, not fused into one obligation.
Whose is the head? A dilemma: a priest sells the butcher the head, keeping the rest —
“the head is yours and the rest is mine.” Do we follow the obligation (the limb bearing
the jaw, now the Israelite’s — so he is obligated), or the principal of the animal (still the
priest’s — so exempt)? Come and hear: one who buys a gentile’s wool before shearing is
exempt from the first shearing — and this is a stringency in the foreleg, jaw, and maw:
one who buys a limb from a priest before slaughter is obligated in its gift, even though it
is not the animal’s principal. Conclude: we follow the obligation.
A word of retention. The mishna’s close: if the seller said “except for the gifts,” the
buyer is exempt — they were never sold to him (the thread that opens tomorrow’s daf).
The distinctions, side by side
The sharpest argument on the page is Rav Huna against Ḥiyya bar Rav — how far a partnership in
one part of the animal reaches. The Gemara settles it decisively for Rav Huna.
One line to carry with you
The gift is real either way — the question the daf will not let go of is the hand that takes
it. Seize it and you scorn the mitzva; wait for it to be given and the same gift becomes an
honor. The modest withdraw their hands.
Recorriendo la suguiá, paso a paso
133a — creer, arrebatar y retirarse
Iba dirigido a Rava. ¡Entonces léanselo a Rava!
diezmo, cuyo valor de rescate no tiene santidad, y que por eso los Sabios vedaron del mercado;
(pata delantera, quijada, cuajar); el rescate del primogénito; el rescate de un asno primogénito;
- עשר במקדש — חטאת; חטאת העוף; אשם ודאי; אשם תלוי; זבחי שלמי ציבור; לוג שמן של מצורע; שתי הלחם;
